There has been too much hoo-ha about the supposedly racist remarks made by Senator Harry Reid about President Obama.
(Now will I too be labeled as a racist?!)
Look at what he did NOT say. He said nothing (that I know of) to disparage Obama's intellect, knowledge, values, or anything significant about him.
Reid's remarks can, and probably ought to be, construed as referring more to the electorate than to the candidate. If he was saying that the American people probably wouldn't have chosen Obama if he had not been half European-American, highly intelligent/educated/articulate, and very fine of manner, who can argue with him?
Not me! I feel compelled to add, though, because of the crazy attitudes these days, that I am describing what happened and not what I think should have happened -- I am NOT saying that if Obama's mother weren't white, he shouldn't have been elected. Nope. See the difference?
Folks, for many of us, it is not about color and never was. Hooray for President Obama! - for the content of his character.
